The wife of an Oklahoma pastor gunned down in his bed in the middle of the night is now charged with hiring his killer – a man the couple had had sex with.

The town of Ada, Oklahoma, was shocked last week when David Evans, 50, was shot to death as he slept next to his wife, Kristie Dawnell Evans, 47. She immediately called police, according to accounts in The Kansas City Star.

She said she had awakened to a “pop” and smelled smoke, then saw her husband bleeding from the nose and mouth, she told police at the time. A hole was visible in his head, she told police, and he was making a “gasping noise,” according to The Star.

It took her a few days to admit to police that she and the Harmony Free Will Baptist Church pastor had had sex with his attacker, and further, that she had convinced that third party to kill her husband after carrying on with that lover separately while her husband was away.

Kristie Evans was taken into custody last Thursday, and Kahlil Deamie Square, 26, that evening, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) said Friday. Both were being held in separate jails.

Kristie Evans had called 911 just after 1 a.m. last Monday, “stating an intruder had entered her home” and shot her husband, the OSBI said in a statement.

“When officers arrived at the residence, they found 50-year-old Pastor David Evans with a gunshot wound. He died at the scene,” authorities said.

Evidence and interviews pointed to Kristie Evans and Square. She confessed, and the two were taken in.

“This investigation was truly a team effort,” said Ricky Adams, director of the OSBI. “OSBI agents from across the state worked tirelessly on this investigation for days. With the help of OSBI intelligence analysts and multiple law enforcement agencies, the suspects responsible for Evans’ murder are in custody. Our team will always follow the evidence and find the truth.”

The truth still left the community and the church members reeling. Before the arrests, just after learning of the murder, 60 church members of the church he had served as pastor for five years held a prayer service, reported KXII-TV.

“He was always a very outgoing guy,” Oklahoma Freewill Baptist Church’s Executive Director Mike Wade told KXII. “He always had a smile on his face, always looking out for the needs of others.”

What they didn’t know was just how outgoing he was, or how many needs he was satiating. During the homicide investigation it emerged that the couple in fact had a secret life as swingers, The Oklahoman reported. They had met Square at a Super 8 motel for sex “on more than one occasion” in the months leading up to the murder, the newspaper said, citing the arrest affidavit.

“On one of those occasions, Kristie secretly dropped her phone number on the floor for Kahlil,” the affidavit said. “Kristie continued to communicate by phone daily with Kahlil without David’s knowledge.”

When David Evans was in Mexico on a mission, his wife continued meeting with Square on the sly, and then convinced him to kill her husband.
